Teacher Village Residency

The Teacher Village initiative helps to diversify the teaching force by providing pre-service opportunities for participants and inspire them to enter the teaching force. Our goal is to recruit and retain staff who look like the students they serve and that have a heart for foster youth, first generation college students and students in high poverty zip codes.

The research suggests that 25-50% of teachers leave the teaching profession within three years

and 10% leave within their first year of teaching (Inman, & Marlow, 2004). Teachers leave for various reasons, but one of the main reasons is a lack of support. The initiative seeks to address this by providing support to preservice teachers to cultivate confidence and competence in working with vulnerable populations of students. Research conducted in conjunction with John Hopkins University, found that if a low income Black student has one Black teacher in elementary school, it increases the likelihood that they will graduate from high school and consider attending college (Gershenson & Hart, 2017) Our Black and Latino students need to see teachers who look like them in the classroom, but those teachers also need to feel confident in their work.

Your donations go directly to support the work we are doing with African American male pre-service teachers in elementary schools in Los Angeles. When you decide to be a CHAMPION with us you help us provide: stipends, housing, training, jobs, and mentors for our Teacher Village Fellows.
